WYNDUNE ESTATE

This Estate was originally built in 1900 and is situated in the Hudson Valley. The grounds were designed by Fletcher Steele (1885-1971), an American Landscape Architect who is credited with designing some of the most notable private gardens of the previous century. One of Steele’s particular design characteristics is the use of a curved line, which you can see in the curved garden wall of the original carriage house of this estate. GF/A was tasked to update the original carriage house, which had been broken into smaller rooms since its original inception, and open it up to create a music room for the owner, who is a professional music historian, while also connecting the carriage house with the larger estate without detracting from its original beauty. GF/A preserved the original curved garden wall but largely demolished and reconstructed the remaining carriage house, which had fallen into disrepair. We raised the roof, creating a dormered roofline to echo the adjacent estate and allow filtered light to dapple into the space below. Large arched glazed doors and windows were built to allow light and reflect the historic detailing of the original home. A new fireplace was added with a custom mantle, as was cherry flooring throughout.

Along with the carriage house, the project included adding a new garage and a connecting circulation space that allowed travel from the existing home. Above the garage, we designed a new living area, den, and bathroom. Custom millwork with fluted detailing, designed to hold the owner’s many musical scores and artifacts, was inspired by cabinetry original to the house. We replicated details from the historic home, including the brickwork, large glazed windows, arched garage doors, and a cupola to top off the new structure, ensuring the carriage house blends in seamlessly with the historic details found throughout this Hudson Valley landmark.
